Pitigliano is still the same gorgeous little old town built over a tuff spur many centuries ago, where the houses blend in the rocks underneath them and viceversa. It’s a maze of little lanes, one after the other, some times so narrow people can hardly go through them. Each domination along its history has left a mark within its territory: the Etruscans, the Romans, the civilisations of the Middle Ages. All the findings dating back to these cultural ages can be admired today in local museums (Civic Museum of Etruscan Civilisation, Alberto Manzi Open Air Museum, Jewish Museum, Diocesan Museum of Palazzo Orsini). Every population passed by Pitigliano has dug its tuff rocks for some reasons, creating another town underneath the town, made of tunnels, wells, tombs, wine-cellars and “colombari”.
There are two multi-media centres provided with Welcome totems dedicated to Pitigliano’s territory: one is based within the Museum of Etruscan Civilisation, the other is in the necropolis located along Via Cava of Gradone, which was entirely carved out of tuff. Pitigliano is not the only site witnessing the ancient civilisations who lived in this area. In the neighbourhoods, Sovana and Sorano also offer totem stations for visitors to interface the territory.
Through their documentation, these multi-media centres provide much more than just historical information: for, this area also offers tourists the possibility to spend their days here doing open-air sports, tasting local gastronomy in one of the many restaurants available or following the Colli di Maremma Wine Road to try local varieties such as Bianco di Pigliano, Sovana and many other DOC-branded local wines.
