The Orsini Fortress of Sorano is a commanding, complex structure, towering over the town.
It is accessed by passing over a broad moat that runs around an initial retaining wall. Having crossed a bridge, which was once raised, one enters by means of an impressive keep, which leads to the first courtyard, a vast square at the extreme ends of which are found the entrances to two corner bulwarks of the small fortress: the bulwarks of St. Mark and St. Peter.
A bridge is reached from the first courtyard, which passes over a second moat in order to access a second square, the innermost section and oldest core of the fortress.
